Missional Field Notes

Quotes, Examples, and Ideas from My Missional Frontier

One of the challenges we had while engaging in BLESSING Groups (Our Missional Communities) was the notion that this was yet another church activity. And while that might be OK for adults, it was a challenge making it clear that it was for kids as well. In fact, it was for families. It was an uphill battle.

I like what Reach Church has to say about kids and their participation in Missional Communities (MCs):

MC’s are a family on the mission of God. We take the idea of being the church seriously at Reach. We actually believe that the Church is a forever family. According to Paul all who have placed their trust in Jesus are now adopted into a family called the Church (Ephesians 1:5). In fact, Jesus reinterprets family for us (Luke 8:21). He moves us from Church as an event or a building to Church as family. In the narrative of Scripture the proper response to being the church was action. People moved from individualism and consumerism to a family who shared their lives and their stuff (Acts 2:42-47). Here’s a helpful paradigm shift; when you gather as a MC you are gathering with family, not dragging your family to an event. Having this mentality and reminding one another of it regularly is hugely important. If we really are a family, then we work through family issues (like kids) together.

If we are going to consider missional communities “families” then we really need to have all of the family be a part of it.
